LostIRC has just upgraded services to Anope 1.8.5 (Stable) and is running smoothly. If any user is having issues feel free to join #helpdesk or contact us here.

Anope Team have announced these changes in this release:

* Support for building on MS Visual Studio 2010 (we still build the binary releases on VS2008)

* Improved logging facilities.

* Optional mail forking (for non Windows OS)

* Many many bug fixes (encourage all users to upgrade once tested)

As always we encourage all users of the stable branch to upgrade to the latest version when they are able to. Of course as per normal procedure you should run this on your testnet with your modules & databases before going live.

Finally, I write with some disappointment at the poor show of people willing to test this release. .

Too few people were willing to help us test this release which has delayed things considerably even to the point where I wasn’t going to bother until people actually did take part. I then decided this was unfair to those who did bother and to that end here it is.

My thanks as always go to the folks who did bother; you guys know who you are and we’re grateful for your continued support.

We would welcome more support in the future to avoid potential release delays. Contact me if you are interested.

Introduction
This Acceptable Use Policy governs the use of computers and servers on the LostIRC Internet Relay Chat Network, including but not limited to, its web pages, and e-mail services. As a user of these resources, you are responsible for reading and understanding this document. This document protects the users of LostIRC, computing hardware and networks, and system administrators.

Connection to the LostIRC IRC network is a privilege, not a right. LostIRC reserves the right to deny access to its network without advanced warning and without being under any obligation to provide a reason. Where a reason is provided, it is done so at the discretion of LostIRC.

LostIRC is an unmoderated forum made possible by the donations of its service providers and volunteer staff. By connecting to LostIRC you accept that you are a guest on a private system. Your privilege of use is revokable at any time for any reason. Further you accept that you have no claim to any data maintained by LostIRC that you have used.

LostIRC does not control/monitor the content transmitted via its services and, as such, does not guarantee the accuracy, integrity or quality of such content. You understand that by using LostIRC, you may be exposed to content that is offensive, indecent or objectionable. Under no circumstances will LostIRC be liable in any way for any content, including, but not limited to, for any errors or omissions in any content, or for any loss or damage of any kind incurred as a result of the use of any content posted, emailed, transmitted or otherwise made available via LostIRC.

LostIRC reserves the right to alter this AUP and any terms and conditions of service at any time without prior notice. However, a notice will be sent to the News Section on the website at least 10 days in advance of such changes if possible. Notice is deemed given when sent.

The LostIRC AUP is under constant review. We consider comments from our users and from experienced staff. We will change this document from time to time. You are subject to the AUP in effect at the time you use any LostIRC resource/service, and to each revision of the AUP that becomes effective subsequently. This version of the LostIRC AUP supersedes all earlier versions.

The formation, construction, and performance of the AUP will be construed in accordance with the laws of California. If any provision of the AUP is held invalid or unenforceable, the remainder of the AUP will nevertheless remain in full force and effect. If any provision is held invalid or unenforceable with respect to particular circumstances, it will nevertheless remain in full force and effect in all other circumstances.

Rights and Responsibilities
This network can provide access to resources locally, as well as the ability to communicate with other users worldwide. Such open access is a privilege and requires that individual users act responsibly. Users must respect the rights of other users, respect the integrity of the systems and related physical resources, and observe all relevant laws, regulations, and contractual obligations. Since electronic information is volatile and easily reproduced, users must exercise care in acknowledging and respecting the work of others through strict adherence to software licensing agreements and copyright laws. LostIRC will openly and fully cooperate with any duly authorized law enforcement agency in their efforts to enforce their laws.

By using LostIRC, you agree to indemnify and hold harmless LostIRC, its resource providers, officers, operators, administrators, and other agents from any and all claims, costs, expenses, judgments, causes of action, attorney fees, litigation and court costs, resulting from the subscriber’s use of LostIRC services in any manner, whether directly or indirectly or by any act or omission.

You are solely responsible for the knowledge of and adherence to any and all laws, statutes, rules and regulations pertaining to (1) your use of any LostIRC service, (2) the communications means by which you connect your terminal, personal computer or other device to LostIRC services or to any service provided to and by LostIRC, and (3) the local LostIRC server you connect to as stated or referenced to in its Message of the Day (/motd).

Your rights herein granted cannot be transferred, assigned, shared, sold, or used by anyone other than yourself.

LostIRC has the right to delete ALL data files, or other information that is stored in any database operated by a LostIRC officer or under the auspices of LostIRC once your nick/channel’s registration has been terminated, by either you or LostIRC.

No warranty is made by LostIRC regarding any information, services or products provided through, in connection with, or located on the computer systems owned by, or operated under the auspices of, LostIRC or any other services provided by LostIRC. LostIRC hereby expressly disclaims any and all warranties, including without limitation (i) any warranties as to the availability, accuracy, or content of information, products, or services; and, (ii) any warranties of merchantabilitiy or fitness for a particular purpose.

LostIRC shall have no liability for damages caused or allegedly caused by any failure of performance, error, omission, interruption, electrical surge or damage or interference, deletion, defect, delay in operation or transmission, communication line failure.

No agent, officer, or representative of LostIRC has any authority to bind LostIRC to any affirmation, representation, or warranty concerning the services provided by LostIRC.

Enforcement
Minor infractions of this policy, when accidental, such as connecting multiple clients, or flooding, are generally resolved informally by a network operator and may result in temporary removal from the network (/kill) or dealt with through electronic mail or on-line discussion and education.

Repeated minor infractions or misconduct which is more serious may result in the temporary or permanent loss of network access privileges (k-line) or the modification of those privileges. More serious violations include, but are not limited to unauthorized use of nickserv/chanserv accounts, attempts to steal passwords or data, repeated harassment, or threatening behavior. In addition the offender’s service provider will most likely be informed.

Harassment, as mentioned above, shall include, but is not limited to, the following:

Repeated unwanted communication to a user beyond that user’s reasonably expected ability to deal with the situation (e.g. /ignore & /silence).

The use of network resources to publicly (viewable from outside a channel; e.g. in a /topic) antagonize, defame, or demean any person.

Transmitting, without consent, a person’s private/privileged identification and/or financial information. Examples being: Real Name, Phone Number, Address, Social Security Number, Bank Accounts Numbers, Credit Card Numbers, etc …
[Note: Channels structured to facilitate harassment as detailed above are subject to closure.]

Upon receiving a “BAN”, the user is on notice that they are no longer authorized to access LostIRC’s systems. Any attempt to circumvent the restriction will be considered trespass and subject to civil prosecution. The user is instructed to contact bans@lostirc.org via e-mail to facilitate the removal of the restriction and to once again be authorized to use the system.

LostIRC endeavors to allow all persons to be able to use its services in a free and unmoderated manner. However, LostIRC will its right to remove users at its own determination, when it feels that doing so benefits the community as a whole. There are times when accomplishing this requires restricting access to an entire ISP. LostIRC will make every effort to work with the affected ISP to track down and restrict just the offending individual(s) and once again allow access to the ISP’s normal userbase.

The failure of LostIRC to exercise or enforce any right or provision of the AUP shall not constitute a waiver of such right or provision.

Conduct Which Violates this Policy
Definition: An “account” with regard to any of LostIRC’s services (Nickserv, Chanserv, MemoServ etc) is the data within said services that is designated for a specific user based upon their selected nickname and/or channel. Access to an “account” is derived by appearing with a recognizable user address and/or supplying an appropriate password. Upon creating an account, the user assumes full responsibility for the confidentiality of your account/password. You are responsible for all uses of your account, whether or not actually or expressly authorized by you.

Conduct which violates this policy includes, but is not limited to, the activities in the following list.

Unauthorized access of a nickserv/chanserv account.

Using LostIRC to gain unauthorized access to any computer systems.

Connecting unauthorized servers to the network.

Unauthorized attempts to circumvent data protection schemes or uncover security loopholes. This includes creating and/or running programs that are designed to identify security loopholes and/or decrypt intentionally secure data.

Knowingly or carelessly performing an act that will interfere with the normal operations of computers, servers, or processes on LostIRC.

Knowingly or carelessly running any program that may damage or place excessive load on a server or the network. This includes, but is not limited to, mass-invites, mass-messages, and programs known as floodbots and clonebots.

Connecting an automated client (bot, fserv, etc..) to a LostIRC server without prior authorization by that server’s administration.

Using LostIRC resources for commercial activity, such as advertising or selling a product, for the purpose of financial gain, without prior approval of the LostIRC administration.

Forging the identity of a user or machine in an electronic communication.

Displaying obscene, lewd, or sexually harassing images or text on a public channel without the prior consent of that channel’s operators.

Intentionally repeating or transmitting material in a rapid manner producing the affect of harassing a user by “flooding” them.

Attempting to monitor or tamper with another user’s electronic communications, or reading, copying, changing, or deleting any part of another user’s nickserv/chanserv/memoserv account without the explicit agreement of the owner.

Using a channel for the primary purpose of facilitating the transfer of files.

IRC stands for “Internet Relay Chat”, and is used to represent chatroom networks where people from all over can get together. Many networks have multiple servers, giving the users multiple sites to connect from. To connect, you need an IRC client, of which there are many. This tutorial focuses on mIRC, a shareware program. So if you don’t have a copy yet, or if you don’t think you have the latest one, go grab that file now. As of this writing, the current version is 7.1. If you’re using the Trillian IM client, it already has an IRC client built in, so you might want to try that first.

How to Install mIRC

Installing mIRC is simple, that’s one of the reasons we like it. Simply download the file from www.mirc.com and run it. The install file asks you for the directory, defaulting to
C:\Program Files\mIRC
, and that’s it! Everything else is automated.

Connecting to IRC

Connecting to IRC is almost as easy as installing it. When you first run the program, the options window pops up with a small form to fill out. In the drop-down list, you choose the server. Just change this to
LostIRC: Random server
and you’ll have no problem connecting.

In the box where it says
Full Name
, just enter your first name, or perhaps a character name. This isn’t displayed, but it’s a good precaution to not put much personal information into these windows. The same carries for the
E-Mail Address
box.

Finally, you have the
Nickname
and
Alternative
boxes. These are what control the name you appear as, so pick whatever you want. If someone already has the nickname you put in the first box, mIRC will try to set you to the alternative. If neither work, it will prompt you for a different nickname.

At the bottom of the menu is a checkbox labelled
Invisible Mode
. Basically, this has to do with people being able to check if you’re connected without knowing your nickname, like listing all the nicknames on the server. We suggest you put a check in this box, just for privacy and security.

Now just click on the
Connect to IRC server
button, and you’ll be connected in no time at all.

Joining a Channel

Joining a channel is simple. If you’ve done everything correctly, you’ll be looking at a channels folder list. This list isn’t very useful, so I suggest you uncheck the
Pop up folder on connect
box, and close the window by hitting the small
X
in the corner.

Now you’ll be staring at a window that is prompting you for a command. If you want to see a listing of the channels currently open, type in
/list
, but since you already know the channel name, you don’t have to do that. The command to join a channel is
/join <Channel Name>
. Try it out by typing
/join #wolf
.

If you try to join a channel that doesn’t exist (has 0 members) the channel is created for you. You can use this to make a new channel to chat in, and invite others to come chat with you.

Nickserv

LostIRC has a nice feature called Nickserv, which allows you to ‘register’ your nickname, so nobody else can use it. The command to do this is
/msg nickserv register <password> <email>
. It’s important to use a password you’ll remember, and to put in a real email address. You’ll need to check your email and verify your address to finish registration, and if you forget your password, they’ll use that email address to send you a reminder.

Once you register your nickname, you’ll have to identify yourself every time you log in or change your nickname to the registered one. The command to do that is
/msg nickserv identify <password>
. Once you do that, you’ll get a message that tells you you’ve been identified.

To prevent the nickserv from becoming filled with unused old names, if you don’t log on for an extended time span there’s a good chance that your nickname will be reclaimed, and you’ll have to register it again.

Other Useful Commands

IRC has a vast range of commands and abilities, but most of them aren’t needed by most of us. There are a few that are important to know though, and you might find yourself using a lot.

/me <description>

It’s like an IRC emote. * Virgil throws a large rock at Marduk

/nick <nickname>

Changes your nickname

/part

Leaves the channel you type it in

/quit <message>

Quits IRC, with the message you specify

/msg <nick> <message>

Sends a private message to the nick you specify

If you need to know how to do something else, the best way learn how is to ask in the
#help
channel.

Automating Your Connection

One of the most useful features of mIRC is buried in the options menu. Usually when you log into IRC, there’s a few things you want to do – set your nick, identify yourself to nickserv, and join one or more channels. mIRC can let you do this automatically, if you set it up.

To do this, do the following steps.

Open the options menu, it’s under
File | Options

Make syre the ‘tree’ under
Connect
is open, by clicking on the small
+
next to it

Choose the
Options
category, and do the following things:

Check the
Connect on startup
box

Check the
Reconnect on disconnection
box

Uncheck the
Pop up connection dialogue on startup
box

Check the
Move to top of list on connect
box

Now open the
IRC
tree, by clicking on the small
+

Choose the
Perform
category, and do these things:

Check the
On connect, perform these commands
box

Fill in the box with the commands you would type at the beginning. It might look like this:

/nick YourNick
/msg nickserv identify <password>
/join #wolf

And that’s it! If you did everything correctly, next time you run the program you can just sit back (or wander off to get a drink), and before you know it you’ll be identified and sitting in all your usual channels.
